Hats, hats, hats! Whether you finish your outfit with a jaunty beret or a great fedora cocked to one side, a hat is the perfect way to showcase your personality as well as finish off an outfit for any occasion.

While in Paris and in the rain for a couple weeks, I had to mask many ‘bad hair days’. Using the secret of a hat that allow French women to look classic and beautiful every day, I pulled on my small brimmed black hat with a low ponytail and viola - left the hotel feeling very chic and very Parisian!

For centuries hats have revealed more about a person than any other form of communication. The way a hat is worn can convey the emotions of the wearer. A hat crooked to the side is considered stylish and worldly. A hat worn low shielding the eyes sends the message of someone who wants to be left alone. A hat can show status; Marie Antoinette would not allow any of the ladies of her court to have higher headdresses than her own. But there is no hat that revealed more style and sophistication than that of Audrey Hepburn - her wide brimmed black hat which accompanied the famous little black cocktail dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s .

Hats have become one of the hottest accessories, but why are women not wearing them? Everyone that I talk to about hats said, “I love hats, but I never wear them”. It is common for most people to consider a hat for special occasions, yet most of the recent styles can be worn for both casual and formal events. However, do not mistake the ever-so-common baseball cap for a casual event, but wear a crochet beanie with retro flair instead.

When contemplating buying that perfect hat, remember that balance is the key when choosing the right hat that is best suited for your face shape, body, and wardrobe – but most importantly – choose a hat that reflects your personality and sense of style!

Quick considerations when buying a hat:

Your Body Shape:

ü If you are petite - choose hats with small brims and low crowns and avoid big hats – too overpowering for a small frame.

ü If you are tall choose a wide brim hat and a shorter crown and avoid narrow, angular shaped hats.

ü If you are full figured choose wide, full brimmed hats which can add balance to a curvy figure.

Your Face Shape:

ü If you have a long face avoid narrow brims and choose wide hats with curled or floppy brims to avoid adding length to the face.

ü If you have a round face choose hats that are wider than your face with high brims and angular shapes – avoid round, circular or floppy-shapes.

ü If you have an oval face you can choose almost any style of hat – so experiment with all the styles to find the perfect topper.

Designers have turned up the volume when it comes to hats, so do not have them sit on store shelves – try one on, complete your outfit and be ready to accept compliments from those who wish to wear one just like you!
